Born on a dairy farm on Winget Road outside Charlotte, Al was the third-generation Winget to make that claim - part of a family whose traditions are as rich as the history they've written.
Al earned a Morehead Scholarship to attend UNC-Chapel Hill and graduated (having lettered for four years on the wrestling team) with a degree in Psychology. But Al's fondest memories of life at UNC were of meeting Susan, an art major from the suburbs, who he enticed to move to the family farm by presenting her with a horse, not an engagement ring (it worked). Today, after more than 40 years of marriage, living on the family farm is still part of life, having moved from the farm where his father was born to his mother’s family farm in Clover, SC in 2017.
His two sons and families live on the farmland as well. Susan turned her artistic talent into a thriving business. In fact, her local design studio employs six and has expanded its loyal following, to designs for greeting cards, calendars, fabric, and china.
Al is a Deacon at Historic Steele Creek Presbyterian Church at Pleasant Hill and is also involved with the YMCA in his community, working to bring a Family Y to the Steele Creek community. Meanwhile, his sons, Mac and Sam, work together in the commercial construction industry and his daughter, Erin, is married to a Lutheran pastor in Deland, FL. Between work, the farm, church, and his grandchildren, life is full.
