What is a Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®)?

A Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) professional is accredited by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards as having met the high standards of technical competency, experience, and ethics established and enforced by the CFP Board.

Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) is a non-profit organization that fosters professional standards in personal financial planning through its setting and enforcement of the education, examination, experience, ethics, and other requirements for CFP® certification. The CFP Board of Standards requires CFP professionals to act in the best interests of their clients.

The mission of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards is “to benefit the public by granting the CFP® certification and upholding it as the recognized standard of excellence for competent and ethical personal financial planning."

Why work with a CFP®?

With more than 100 certifications available to financial professionals, the CFP® designation stands out. Those three letters show that someone is qualified in financial and investment planning, and that they provide an honest fiduciary benefit to their clients. Not everyone who calls themselves a financial advisor can say that.

CFP®'s are also held to the highest ethical standards in the industry, priding themselves on:

  • Integrity
  • Objectivity
  • Competence
  • Fairness
  • Confidentiality
  • Professionalism
  • Diligence
